I know it’s only been about half a month ago since I was in Singapore for a media trip but I can’t wait to go again. I’ve listed out 12 places you should visit around Singapore in December since there are plenty of reasons to be there, from Zoukout to Christmas and end it with the New Year’s celebration.
What’s a better way than to end the year with a bang in Singapore? I will be at Zoukout this year, for the first time in my life. If you’re going or you happen to see me there, do holla! I know a lot of my friends are going down for that, and there are plenty of affordable places you could stay at around Singapore. Did I mention that public transportation is ace? You could go to practically anywhere via the MRT and it won’t even burn a hole in your pocket.
1. Christmas Light-up
20 Nov 2010-2 Jan 2011, Orchard Road and Marina Bay
Picture: travelerfolio.com – Tanglin Mall during Christmas and smh.com.au – street lights
I remember the last time I went to Singapore at the end of December, it was magical. There were Christmas trees lit up along Orchard road, albeit the absence of snow was apparent, it still did not dampen the mood of holiday season. Christmas celebration starts early in Singapore with the Christmas Light-Up festival which will begin on the 20 November 2010. However, the Christmas sales would be one of the main attractions as the sales are worth to be checked out. Whip out your cameras and phones, bring your loved ones and bask in the ambience of the joyful season with beautiful ornaments on trees, street lights, and the love in the air.
The Starlit theme of Orchard Road’s breathtaking Christmas street light-up will be carried on in the vicinity of Marina Bay under the name of “Marina Bay Christmas Splendour”, and as this would be the first time Marina Bay Sands to celebrate Christmas, expect it to be nothing less than grand and filled with the best lights in town complemented by the beautiful scenery of the bay.

3. Walking with Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular
1-10 Dec, Singapore Indoor Stadium
1-10 Dec, Singapore Indoor Stadium
When I was a kid, I’ve always been fascinated with four things: Sharks, ancient dynasty histories, the human body and also – Dinosaurs! My favourite dinosaurs would be the T-Rex, Pterodactyl, and the Brontosaurus. This December in Singapore, however, Singapore Indoor Stadium will be hosting the award-winning BBC TV series in a theatrical event. Watch ‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ in real-life with 20 huge dinosaurs rule the Earth again. This $25million production is set to dazzle you as they walk, roar and fight for survival and supremacy. Go on www.dinosaurlive.com.sg for more info on the show.

5. Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2010/11
31 Dec, Marina Bay
31 Dec, Marina Bay
Marina Bay Sands has been a modern icon for Singapore since its launch, and now, to usher in 2011, Marina Bay Sands would be hosting Marina Bay Singapore Countdown where locals and foreigners unite with new hopes, aspirations and dreams at the same time, complemented with a beautiful backdrop of the majestic Marina Bay Sands and icons like the Esplanade and The Helix.
Visitors to the Marina Bay area can even write their wishes down on special “Wishing Spheres” which will float on the waters of Marina Bay as an art installation. While New York City is famed for the Times Square New Year’s celebration and The Opera House is for Sydney’s, Marina Bay Sands would also be paving a name for one of the biggest and most exciting New Year’s party around the world.

6. Siloso Beach Party
31 Dec, Sentosa
Other than Zoukout, the other biggest party of the year in Singapore would be the Siloso Beach Party to usher in the New Year with a beach party in Sentosa Island. So instead of celebrating it in the city, why not escape for a while to the beach and experience 10 hours of non-stop awesome music and tons of fireworks in Siloso.
The party usually spreads out for more than a kilometer stretch, where you can get your groove on at COASTES and Azzura, have a little taste of Ibiza’s Café Del Mar, or even surf at the Wave House. You can take a breather at the new Chill-Out stage, take a dive into the famous foam pool and get a grub from tons of places along the party beach. There will be street performers such as fire-eaters, stilt-walkers and so on to enchant you towards the first sunrise of 2011.

7. Clarke Quay New Year’s Eve Countdown Party 2010
31 Dec. Central Square, Clarke Quay
31 Dec. Central Square, Clarke Quay
There’s not a trip to Singapore that would be complete if I did not pay a visit to Clarke Quay. There are plenty of eateries such as Hooters (my favourite) and also other kinds of food (Mediterranean, Spanish, Western, Oriental). Clarke Quay seems to be the most popular hub for foreigners and locals to party the weekend off, with an array of bars and pubs along the main street, not to mention the ones in the centre of Clarke Quay itself. Drop by at The Clinic if you want a different kind of drinking experience or dance the night away to Bangra music at The Rupee Room. There will be plenty of mixture of things in store for guests at Clarke Quay every week, and especially on New Year’s Eve. It is easily accessible via MRT and there are plenty of taxis available around the area =)

9. Shopping at Orchard Road
Orchard Road received its name due to the orchards that used to be in the area til the early 19th century up until a mysterious disease came along that wiped out the entire plantation. Flooding of the area was also common as it used to be surrounded by valleys all around. Orchard Road, nowadays, is one of the busiest centres in Singapore, housing towering malls, buildings and also million dollar apartments with all kinds of crowd occupying the streets.

11. Sands SkyPark®
Marina Bay Sands
Marina Bay Sands
I was lucky enough to be able to experience this wonderful view thanks to Marina Bay Sands earlier this month.
For full story click here
This amazing architectural landmark, placed on top of the three Marina Bay Sands hotel towers at 200m above ground level, is the brainchild of the architectural genius, Moshe Safdie. The infinity pool is one of the main attraction for the hotel, other than the breathtaking view especially at night. With an impressive 12,400 square meters of space, the Sands SkyPark can host up to 3900 people for a one of a kind panoramic view.
This viewing deck, is not just a viewing deck with an infinity pool, it also houses one of the swankiest lounge/bar in the world. Situated on top of the third tower of Marina Bay Sands, Ku De Ta was voted as one of the top 10 global hotspots by New York Times.

12. Universal Studios Singapore®
Sentosa Island
I have to admit that I’m an adrenaline junkie and a child at heart. So when I heard the news that Universal Studios is opening up on this region of Asia, I was excited! I haven’t had the chance to drop by and experience the rides just yet, but Singapore is only a stone’s throw away that I will definitely be going back just to spend a day at Universal Studios there.
Located in Resorts World Sentosa, Universal Studios Singapore is Southeast Asia's first ever Hollywood movie theme park. There’s 24 rides and attractions, 18 of which are unique to Singapore, ready to entice you to a new level of excitement. Starting from Tinseltown, where you can experience the glamour of Hollywood, up to the rush of Battlestar Gallactica, world’s tallest dueling rollercoaster. If you like water, opt for Jurassic Park Rapids as you float through a rushing river stream or even go for the WaterWorld show. For fans of Shrek, you can drop by at the world’s first Far Far Away castle, or even embark on an African boat-ride adventure with Madagascar. I definitely fell in love with the Universal Studios in Florida so it kept me wondering, how would the Singapore one match up to it? We’ll have to wait and see then ;)
